The UK Drum show 2020!
As I write this article, I am currently sitting on a train station platform at 10 pm on a Sunday evening as I travel home from one of the most significant weekends in my career as a drum tutor/educator. In collaboration with Trinity College London and Roland, I was given the opportunity to deliver lessons from the new Trinity Drum Kit and Percussion course (in which I have consulted on) at the UK Drum Show 2019. I was kitted out with a classroom full of 13 Roland TD17 kits and a hefty PA system to blare the lessons out across the Manchester Central conference centre. On the Sunday of the UK Drum Show TCL had arranged for the legendary Benny Greb to come to do a meet and greet for his fans in relation to his collaboration with the new course which now features two of his well-known songs ‘Couscous’ and ‘Grebfruit’. Following this session, I was given the opportunity to interview him on his approach to practice technique. To put it bluntly, Benny Greb is my drumming hero and he completely lived up to every one of my expectations in his interview. What was supposed to be a 15-minute interview, turned into an hour due to how thorough he was in his answers to my questions. The last time I met him was 5 years ago when attending his Master Camp. At this camp, we studied in great depth from his book ‘The Language of Drumming’. This course had a pivotal effect on my playing and my general outlook and my career. I hope to share this interview as soon as TCL had edited it all together. For now, here’s a photo from 2014 and 2019 to cover both encounters.
